Friendship

There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)

God has taught me a lot about friendship in this past year. About a year and a half ago I realized how much I neglected connecting with friends and developing new friendships. I vowed that I was going to begin living life differently. What was the reason? I have seen too many pastors who are surrounded by people but have few that really know them and who can speaking into their lives.

Previously, I had never considered myself a person who needed a lot of friends, but have come to realize how much I have missed out on with that belief. I also realized that some of my friends may have needed to me more present than I allowed myself to be at times.

So this has been a period of time where I have been more intentional than ever- I am in a couple small groups, I get together for coffee with friends and connect with people on Facebook. In that I have dared more than ever to go beyond the surface stuff and the brag sessions (typical guy stuff) to sharing my heart and hopes. I realize today that I am blessed with great friends and for that I am thankful.

    Pastor Ben,
Thank you for daring to expose yourself in a deeper way. Each time I read your bolg, I either laugh at the stories, or come to know you in a “regular guy” way. I know that sounds wierd, but given your calling and the immense respect I have for you, I have always kept a business distance so I didn’t clutter up your life and ministry work. I miss you and your family but realize that God has a higher purpose and that you are faithfully walking His plan. I do pray for your ministry and all the awesome blessings that are happening at Timberlake.

I look forward to seeing everyone the next time you are in town.

Good stuff Pastor! This actually speaks more to me and makes me feel comfortable with you as our church’s leader. A great speaker is always nice and fun (which you are!) but the attempt for sincerity and depth of friendships are the real measures (to me) of a person. Shows true compassion (and allows you to accept it from others which can only help you move forward in your personal and ministerial life). Best wishes!!
